When discussing equine behaviour and digestive health, we often focus on the hindgut microbiome – and for good reason. As our previous research has shown, the microbiome-gut-brain axis (MGBA) creates a powerful connection between hindgut health and equine behaviour. In the second part of this blog series we take a look beyond the hindgut.
Focusing purely on the hindgut sometimes overshadows another critical component of the equine digestive system: the stomach. Gastric ulcers are painful erosions in the stomach lining that affect a staggering percentage of horses and can dramatically alter behaviour in ways that mirror or compound hindgut-related issues.
“The equine stomach is particularly vulnerable to ulceration due to its continuous acid production,” explains Lisa Elliott, MSc. “Unlike humans, horses secrete stomach acid constantly, not just when eating. Without proper management, this acid can damage the unprotected portions of the stomach lining, creating painful ulcers that significantly impact behaviour.”
Research published in the Equine Veterinary Journal demonstrates that horses with confirmed gastric ulcers show measurably higher stress responses and pain behaviours compared to horses with healthy stomachs. These behaviours include:
- – Increased startling and spooking
- – Reduced willingness to work
- – Back pain and sensitivity
- – Decreased performance
- – General irritability and “grumpiness”
The neural pathways connecting gastric discomfort to behavioural changes involve both direct and indirect mechanisms. Pain signals from the stomach travel directly to the brain via the vagus nerve, altering neurotransmitter levels including serotonin and dopamine. These are the same neurotransmitters affected by hindgut microbial imbalances.
Additionally, gastric ulcers trigger inflammatory responses that can affect the entire digestive tract, potentially disrupting hindgut function and microbial balance. This creates a complex interplay between gastric health, hindgut microbiome, and behaviour that requires a comprehensive management approach.
At Coligone, we understand this intricate relationship. Our products are formulated to support the entire digestive system, from stomach to hindgut, using scientifically-backed ingredients:
- Seaweed buffers help neutralise excess stomach acid
- Prebiotics (ScFOS and MOS) support beneficial bacteria throughout the digestive tract
- Probiotics like Yea-sacc promote microbial balance and digestive efficiency
- High-quality fibre sources provide the foundation for overall gut health
By addressing both gastric and hindgut health simultaneously, Coligone offers a holistic approach to digestive support that promotes balanced behaviour and optimal performance.
